Schottenheimer is Jets' next best option

Damn.

I wanted Bill Cowher at the helm of the New York Jets in the worst way. Today "The Chin" spurned the Jets' advances, either because he didn't like the front office design or because he didn't want to coach Brett Favre, depending on what you read.

To me, now, the choice is clear:
Get Marty Schottenheimer in here.
Because there are two things the Jets can't do:

1) Hire a coach who will switch the team BACK to a 4-3 defense, just when Mangini and Co. jettisoned a bunch of Herman Edwards' first-round picks and finally brought in the personnel to run the friggin' 3-4... and

2) Take another chance on a rookie coach. (Sorry Spags)

Say what you will about Marty, but he's a proven teacher of young talent, has a 200-126 career record in the regular season (good for a robust .613 winning percentage), and is the kind of veteran coach who can coax a playoff-caliber team over the hump.

Yeh, his playoff record sucks. I know that.

This Jets fan will settle for making the playoffs first. I'll worry about the post-season when we get there.
